A Valentine's day horticultural rip-off

luckily i was interested in the shape of the leaf (aesthetics, i know so shallow of me) so i am not so disappointed that it doesn't actually grow into a plant... it turned out to be the most aesthetic choice - leaf that never changes (except when it dies)! luckily i also picked the best shaped one since it's not going to change!

i thought it was a succulent and the flower store clerk didn't know any better... though she said that during the time they had had those plants they hadn't grown and remained the same.

found an air plant (possibly tillandsia ionantha) from another local store and couldn't resist it either. unfortunately this clerk was clueless about air plants in general and said it doesn't need any care (water or sun). if you click the pic you'll see that the ends of the leaves are already browned. i hope it gets better in my care.

in finland air plants are rarely sold in stores. i have heard a good review of this store:

you can order plants to finland too and they promise to send the plant in excellent condition. i would still order from them only during summer time to avoid freezing accidents.

seasonal repotting is finally over! phew!

i can't help advertising ykkösrasti (an s-market) because they have two coconut palms in their store!!! the palms looked so gorgeous. in kuopio ykkösrasti is definitely the place i go if i want to buy a house plant.

Kuopio Dance Festival - here i come!

i was a bit sour that i couldn't participate in a kdf vip viewer competion... the local newspaper was searching for different people to write about the dance shows and no previous experience was required. - the idea is of course to make the town citizens involved and get commoners interested in the art of dance (and also to sell the newspaper). - anyway i suppose the competition was only for the subscribers because i couldn't see any hint of it on the newspaper website. :(

well, since i've been eyeing on the dance festival for years i finally bought tickets to three different shows. (some of the happenings are for free but i don't have time to hang out in the centre for all day. besides i'm doubting it would only lead to getting fed up with dance quite soon.) i think you already guess where i'm heading to... i'll be writing for what i see - here. i don't have vip seats, not even tickets to all of the shows but i have an urge to write about the ones i chose. - and i'd like to see somebody to try to prevent me! :P (ah, how i love to be melodramatic - it shows that i'm already in my artistic mood. :)

so beware kuopio dance festival - there's a pair of alert ears and eyes among the audience and they do not keep silent afterwards! :PPP

Tourist on Monday in Tampere???

some tips for what to do on summer mondays in tampere if you are a tourist
(and when quite a few museums are closed)

1) lenin museum is one of the few museums open on mondays. the museum is literally about him. 

2) go swimming! the lakes are always open. 

3) have a picnic in pyynikki. the ridge is naturally beautiful and the cafe by näkötorni always welcoming with famous finnish "doughnuts" called munkki. (the one licking the sugar from his/her lips first loses!) 

4) ride buses around the city and the suburbs. monday is anyway better for that than sunday. don't forget your 24 h buscard! 

5) take a walk in the arboretum, the botanical garden of hatanpää. on a sunny day preferable time is in the evening from 7 p.m. when it's not too hot anymore. 

6) go shopping. even the smallest specialized shops are open on mondays (besides you'll avoid the saturday crowd). 

7) read a book. you can get a free library card from any of the city's libraries. 

8) count all the shirtless men roaming the streets.

9) count all the corners which smell like urine.

10) relax. you're on a holiday, right?!?
